A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Police Raid on Gangs
At least 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.
Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 people were detained.
Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
State officials stated at least 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Local Reaction
Locals have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.
Access ways continue shut throughout the region.
Gang Growth
The criminal network has been growing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.
Rio's police stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the mission, together with multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by civil and military police follows a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are thought to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
