Adolescent Discovered Deceased After Untrue Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old boy was found dead just days after being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication stated: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony presented to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her infant's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from police later concluded the alleged break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the items was never taken in the first place".
News coverage about the alleged taken remains generated social media responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his mother said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the woman who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he needed, but denied removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that one 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, describing how she had heard him "laughing and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Response
The hearing received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called Kai's parents' telephone and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The court heard his family said they did not receive that message.
Official Finding
Senior investigator told the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the medium of online networks.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his interview he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The coroner determined: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any organization led to or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a personal action it is not possible to discern his intent."
