“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
