{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident occurred on the third circuit when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"
"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be allowed to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the governing body
"During the third lap, marshals were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired subsequent to that time"
