Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World

The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has landed β€” and it brings with it the first new weapon added to the title since the mace made its debut. The spear is finally here and it might just change how you play Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also incorporates several new features and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we desired a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," noted a lead developer. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the use case."

If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your friends on horseback, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest use cases for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and going out and making some real mayhem," she teases.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it should be made an Olympic sport right away.

Another major addition in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also conserve your breath meter, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for fresh air.

The rest of the additions are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a zombie Nautilus popping up in the water, sometimes with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus β€” or the standard version, for that matter β€” with a blowfish.

"We've pondered this problem periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also introduce something for underwater," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus concept art looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can ford waterways while mounted on a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the workbench, so you can give your horse the best defense it deserves.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

All told, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear alone β€” and the mayhem it enables β€” would have felt like a major improvement. Throw in the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
